These dogs are said to have first appeared in Bosnia in the 12th century. They are descendants from the wire haired hound that comes from other eastern Slavic places. They were first used to hunt and track down large game such as deer and even fowl. Coarse Haired Hounds are said to get their strong sense of smell from a Bloodhound, which is also a cousin of theirs.

Appearance of The Bosnian Coarse Haired Hound

Their shaggy beige colored coat is the most eye catching of this breed. They have a short body with quick little legs and they can weigh anywhere from thirty to fifty pounds on average. Their muzzles are of average length and their skulls are circular shaped. They have a good bone structure which keeps their bodies from slumping down. They have sharp shoulders and strong hindquarters. Their most usual coloring is a black back with light brown shaggy fur everywhere else. They also come in an all tan variety.

Temperament of The Bosnian Coarse Haired Hound

Course Haired Hounds are a friendly dog that enjoys the inviting warmth of humans. They have a never stopping attitude when it comes to play time and adore the partnership when working with a hunter. These dogs are quite laid back under many circumstances so they make a great family pet. They can be persistent when wanting something, so they need an owner who can put their foot down when they beg endlessly.

Grooming and Health Care

A Bosnian Course Haired Hound will have some of the most rough fur in canines. They need a special brush that can groom out their fur with the utmost ease. They can get some breakage if brushed too roughly, so soft gentle strokes will be the most beneficial to this breed. Bathing is the same method as brushing, softly rub the shampoo against their fur to get rid of any dirt and grime. These hounds can live up to fourteen years and they have a strong health background, although they are prone to hip dysplasia if they are an active dog.

The Bosnian Hound is the perfect breed of dog for any active person or hunter who needs a strong nose to guide him.
